Sameheads is a unique venue located in the Neukölln district of Berlin, founded in 2006 by three British brothers, Nathan, Lee, and Harry. This space serves not only as a bar and club but also as a gallery, boutique, and a hub for various creative activities. Its multifunctionality attracts a diverse clientele, ranging from fashion enthusiasts and artists to electronic music fans. Sameheads has always been characterized by its informal, ironic aesthetic and intentionally "perfect imperfection," which contributes to its distinctive atmosphere.
However, it's not just the physical space that makes it a significant part of Berlin's local culture. In addition to its music label, Sameheads is particularly focused on hosting regular parties. Over time, it has become home to resident DJs and artists like Alicia Carrera, Eva Geist, Ólta Karawane, Alexander Arpeggio, and my favorite Turkish DJ, Zozo.
It's no wonder that I frequently turn to Sameheads for inspiration, even in the online world. It was through this channel that I discovered a recording of a DJ set by Izzy Demzky from the regular party Maximum Joy. This set, lasting over three hours, showcases his experience and confidence as he effortlessly explores a wide range of musical styles.
Izzy is a Scottish musician who moved to Edinburgh in his youth, where he fully immersed himself in the club scene. His DJ career began in 2006 when he regularly played at Friday night parties at the Meggetland club. Interestingly, this was also the year Sameheads was founded. Shortly after, he secured a residency at the prestigious Musika/Nightvision club. Over the next decade, he continually solidified his position on the local scene until he reached a point where he felt he needed a new challenge, prompting his move to Berlin. You can regularly hear him play at some of Berlin's best listening venues, such as D59B, as well as at many other locations the city has to offer.
